Advance Praise for Implementing Value-Based Healthcare

“Sally Lewis has given us an essential history of value-based healthcare mindset and method, and a pragmatic guidebook for local, national and global healthcare transformation. Through examples and frank assessment of the hard work required, she reminds us that getting to the summit of value is a team effort, and our compass must ever be the health outcomes important to patients.” Jennifer Bright, president and CEO of the International Consortium for  Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM)

Implementing Value-Based Healthcare is essential reading for anyone shaping the future of healthcare. With clarity and insight, Sally Lewis distils the hard-won lessons and the challenges and rewards of implementing value-based healthcare, from frontline practice to system-wide change.” Dr Jonathan Broomberg, group deputy CEO at Vitality and non-executive director at the UCLH Foundation Trust

“This is a must-read for anyone serious about transforming healthcare. Sally Lewis brings the rare perspective of a compassionate clinician leader who truly understands both the complexity of health systems and the critical importance of local context. With clarity and wisdom, she traces the evolution of value-based care, highlighting the variation in its implementation over time and across the globe. This book is not only insightful but deeply practical – offering lessons from real-world experience that will resonate with clinicians, policymakers, and system leaders alike.” — Dr Reem Bunyan, CEO, Value in Health and the Global Innovation Hub for Improving Value in Health, Saudi Arabia

“Sally Lewis takes the reader on a journey through creating value-based healthcare. This book not only highlights the imperative of driving value in healthcare but also offers a practical guide on how to move from words to action.” — Francesca Colombo, head of the OECD’s Health Division

“As a dedicated physician operating within a healthcare system that does not deliver on its mission, Sally Lewis channels her personal experience and frustration into a book that provides actionable strategies for others who, like her, choose not to throw their hands up in the air but to lead change from within. Lewis’s journey shows us that there are many great challenges to overcome and that improving healthcare is not for the faint of heart. But as Implementing Value-Based Healthcare makes clear, there is also hope, and many people who will help you along the way.” Susanna Gallani, Tai Family Associate Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

“The last twenty years have been dominated by the quality paradigm: the belief that all that was needed was for healthcare managers and clinicians to increase the quality, safety and efficiency of clinical care for patients. However, it is now clear that unless we measure outcome as well as quality and relate the use of resources to populations as well as patients, universal healthcare is unsustainable. This means that value-based healthcare is now the dominant paradigm. Sally Lewis has brought about the required paradigm shift in Wales. What she has done is a very good example of what the leaders and managers of health services for populations need to do. The key is to find and support people like Lewis because strong leadership is needed to change the culture. This book summarizes her journey clearly and provides an evidence-based resource for people in leadership positions globally.” Professor Sir Muir Gray, executive director of the Oxford Value and Stewardship Programme, director of the Optimal Ageing Programme, and founding director of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP)

“We should be grateful that Professor Lewis has now written this excellent book. It is the first of its kind: written by someone who has had a critical role in health system transformation, from the very first ideas and attempts to test value-based healthcare in local pilots to a situation today where national leaders in Wales claim that ‘value-based healthcare has become business as usual’. She has led work from the bottom to the top of the pyramid and has been more willing than most to get her hands dirty. She illustrates the day-to-day challenges, the time and commitment that are needed, the necessary multidisciplinary collaboration and the senior leadership support that is required. Professor Lewis summarizes her experiences, learnings and insights in a very personal, clear and convincing way.’ — from the foreword by Dr Stefan Larsson MD PhD, chair of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) and a senior advisor to the Boston Consulting Group

“When trying to change anything in healthcare we need three things: we need a goal, we need the will to achieve it, and crucially we need to know HOW to reach that goal. In her comprehensive guide Implementing Value-Based Healthcare, Professor Sally Lewis draws from (often hard-won) experience to show us what works. With relatable vignettes, clear language and a profound understanding of the nuts and bolts of change, this book should be read by anyone interested in healthcare that is both sustainable and focused on outcomes that matter – which means it should be read by anyone interested in healthcare, full stop.” — Dr Lucy Pollock, geriatrician and author of The Book About Getting Older and The Golden Rule

“Professor Lewis offers powerful, practical insight for clinicians and leaders who want to achieve health care’s noble purpose of enabling health, hope, and healing. This clear, crisp book is rooted in the perspectives of heartfelt commitment to patients and successful leadership of clinical teams undertaking change. Drawing on her own experience, Professor Lewis offers insight on the human and organizational realities that make change challenging so that your team’s journey can benefit from her hard-earned and generously shared wisdom.” — Professor Elizabeth Teisberg PhD, author of Redefining Heath Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results

“Sally Lewis has written a powerful and practical guide to one of the most urgent challenges in healthcare today. Drawing on real-world lessons from Wales and beyond, she shows how value-based healthcare can improve patient outcomes while also making systems more sustainable. A must-read for clinicians, policymakers and leaders seeking a path to better health outcomes for individuals and communities.” — Professor Zoe Wainer, Deputy Secretary, Community & Public Health at Victorian Department of Health

Reviews

“There are a lot of important ideas in the book. Many will enjoy the style which walks through the issues in an autobiographical way. I’m not a fan of this style, but the book summarises the key ideas at the end of each chapter for analytical-minded people like me. I recommend that you read it.” — Health Services Journal review.
